World of Warplanes – Aircraft – Information
I was a Closed Beta Tester for World of Warplanes, but to be honest, did not enjoy the game enough to continue playing for very long. Then 2.0 was released and wow, did it make a difference. I now find the game very enjoyable and fun to play. As a result, I feel compelled to mod it.

Custom Skins
For custom skins, I use various models to start with these include:
- The skins in WoWP that are not normally shown. Premium, Chrome, or others and replace the normal skins (hangar, base, winter, marine, and woodland)
- Add decals and text, including names and pinups
- Take skins from the older versions and rework them into HD for latest version
- Use the base skins and create my own colors, camo, and decals
- Some are historical skins based on artwork of the various planes
Some skins will have a separate post and download link. Others will just have an image in the imgur album for that nation. All downloads are on Yandex Disk in the planes folder. If you see a skin you like in the album, go to Yandex and get the download. Also on the post for each nation, I will list skins and download links.
Enjoy!
Custom Skins Installation
- Download the skin file archive (zip) of your choice
- Inside the archive (zip) is a directory named vehicles, and in some cases a directory scripts
- Copy/move the vehicles, and scripts if available, to the res_mods/<game version>/ directory
- Some HiGloss metal skins have the option to change from bright metal finish to a gunmetal gray finish (still high gloss), to activate that, download the xml file for that aircraft, then copy/move the scripts directory from the archive to the res_mods/<game version>/ directory
High Gloss Metal Skins
These skins have been designed to display with a high gloss appearance to resemble aircraft that have been waxed and polished. The are identified with the addition of _HiGloss to the filename. For example <aircraft>_HiGloss.zip. If you want the metal finish. but do not want the high gloss the delete the res_mods/<version>/vehicles/airplane/<nation>/<aircraft>_SPM.dds file.
Most of the High Gloss use the same pattern with colors varying according to season:
- Hangar (<aircraft>_hangar.dds) Red/Maroon
- Winter (<aircraft>_snow.dds) Baby Blue
- Marine (<aircraft>_marine.dds) Dark Blue
- Summer (<aircraft>_woodland.dds) Olive Drab/Dark Green
- Base (<aircraft>_base.dds) Black/Maroon
Gun Metal Gray High Gloss Skins
This skins are also in the download folder listed above. The have the extension _GM added to the aircraft file name. To get the gun metal finish, you must include the xml file in the script folder. The gun metal finish is a reflection setting in the <plane>.xml file. If you don’t want it to be gun metal gray delete the xml file for that plane in the scripts/db/aircrafts/<nation>/ folder. The skin will then be shiny metal instead.
NOTE: To save storage space, I have a new method of getting the gun metal gray skins.
- Download the HiGloss skin of your choice, only the HiGloss skins will work well, while others may be OK. Or you can use another custom skin you may have already installed. CAUTION, this may over write an existing xml file, check first
- Go into the XML_Files directory, find and download the <aircraft>_GM_xml.zip file for the aircraft you want the gun metal skin on.
- Copy/move the scripts directory from the archive (zip) to the res_mods/<version>/ directory.
- Restart game.
